During May the tulips which bloomed in April are beginning to fade away and the summer flowers are starting to take their hold bringing beautiful colour and excitement to your gardens and vases. By the end of May the Hydrangeas are out, confirming that the heat of summer is on its way. From the 6th of May for 4 days Westminster Abbey becomes the home of flowers as the Major festival of flowers takes place from 11am. The ‘Rejoice’ as it’s named celebrates the 50th anniversary year of the National Association of Flower Arranging Societies (NAFAS). NAFAS is an educational charity dedicated to the promotion of the artistic use of all types of plant material through the medium of its flower clubs for both adults and children. A great day out for the family, whilst it is also educational in the sense that you can learn about flower arrangements, the hard work that goes into planning seasonal decorations and the passion that many people dedicate to this fantastic art.
There are over 200 flower arrangers, each of which represents a club across the United Kingdom, they showcase their designs and blooms throughout the abbey. This year the Golden Anniversary is sure to bring some of the most spectacular flower arrangements Westminster abbey has ever seen, whilst the scents of the flowers are sure to blow you away.

Flower Essences – a Tool of the Spirit

Flower essences should not be confused with “essential oils” as used in aromatherapy. Essential oils are concentrated chemical constituents from herbs, collected by a distillation process. When applied to the skin or inhaled, it has a powerful, but mostly chemical, effect on the body and mind. An essence, on the other hand, is the concentrated energy of the plant; its effects are primarily energetic or “auric”, not physical.
Although knowledge of the healing powers of flowers and herbs goes back many centuries, the modern story of flower essences starts at around 1928. That was when Dr. Edward Bach, a homeopathic doctor, retired from his London practice to the countryside to research a new kind of medicine. Until his death in 1936, he sought out the 38 remedies that now bear his name. In the last 20 years, much research has been done to discover additional remedies around the world.
To make Easter Lily, follow the sun infusion method developed by Dr. Bach. Place a clear, glass pan on the grass in your yard, pour spring water into it (just enough to cover the bottom), and placed 3 easter lily flowers in the pan. This needs to soak up the heating rays of the sun for 4 or 5 hours, from early morning until around noon. What happens when you do this strange operation is truly an alchemical miracle.
When the bottled essence is taken into the human body, the energy is released into your own energy field (the aura) and causes it to change. Something new is added to your aura; old patterns in the aura are rearranged and released. Each essence is experienced, in human terms, as a psychological or emotional force, a new psychic “theme” to integrate. For instance, Easter Lily essence deals with resolving the tension between sexuality and spirituality, purifying the body and its drives. Another flower, Mariposa Lily, deals with the experience of warm maternal love and support, etc. If you have a lack or imbalance in the theme represented by some essence, it will help you reorder your experience into a new balance. In this way, the flowers help us heal old emotional wounds and uncover our true selves. Each flower has its own lesson to teach our souls. Flowers are astounding alchemists.

How to Choose a Flower Girl Dress

When selecting a flower girl dress for your wedding, there are many things to consider – the age and height of the flower girl, wedding colors, dress length, dress style, and so forth. The first step is to know what styles of flower girl dresses are available. First one should know the roles for “Flower Girls”. There are really three distinct roles for little flower girls in a wedding. Flower Girl – a child attendant wearing a child-like dress in either Tea or Formal length who usually carries either a basket of petals to strew on the aisle or path announcing the arrival of the Bride. Miniature / Jr. Bride – a child dressed like a bride. This role comes from medieval times as a decoy to lure evil spirits away from the Bride to avoid a curse on the marriage. She may wear a miniaturized version of the Bride’s gown or a edding-style gown complete with train and flowing headpiece. She carries a bouquet. Jr. Brides Maid – older girls certainly prefer this designation. The young ladies are usually dressed to coordinate more with the Brides Maids rather than in a full, fluffy little girl’s dress. Types of dress: Selecting the right flower girl dress and accessories is an exciting time. Indeed it is a special day for the bride rather than the flower girl but what she wears will help her feel just that much more special and create memories for a life time. Traditionally and in many cultures yet today, the “little bride” look is desirable for flower girl. It is usually a full satin gown with plenty of trimming and a frothy veil on her head. However that trend has now disappeared in many modern parishes. Today we’re seeing a desire for clean lines and simple styles more in tea length than formal. Many feel that this helps focus the emphasis on the child and the meaning of the day. Sleeveless is also definitely popular in many locations. Light touches of beading are still very popular but it is not as ’standard’ as it once was. More modern styles will include lovely dresses with an entirely different silhouette from the standard ballgown style. Selecting the Colors: White or ivory dresses are the most popular (always coordinated with the color of the Bride’s gown). There are many alternatives; consider the following: A white or ivory dress and add a sash in a color close to the color of the Bride’s Maids dresses. It may be possible to order extra fabric from the company where you order the Bride’s Maids’ dresses to have sashes made up. Or, you can select a similar color from a child’s dress company; matching isn’t often that important. A white or ivory flower-petal filled dress. Select flower petals in the color of the flowers everyone will carry or the color of the Bride’s Maids’ dresses. It is not necessary to have an exact match. When to Shop It is very important to shop early so you have the widest possible selection. Start shopping in early October. Shop for her headpiece at the same time – once they are out of stock, they won’t be available again this year. This will allow you time to think things through and order any style you want – even with extra dress length if necessary/available and still have time to make alterations before the day she wears it.

Creating a Flower Basket

We have walked through the steps of creating the May basket, now it is time to craft your flowers. We have added handles, basket, etc, to your quilt, which at this time you should have created six blocks to make your basket. How to create flowers: We are quilting flowers. On the left side of your fabric, you will have invented pink squares. You can trace your pattern to start your project. Trace at least one flower (Choice), use your outside solid lines, and repeat your steps to create the foliage, or leaves. Use the variety of green patterns and use the yellow narrow pieces to create the center of your flower. You can design roses if you like. Use a variety of greens, red, pink, white, etc, if you intend to create roses and petals. Along the lines, you have marked, cut the fabric strips sewn onto your fabric, the shaped patterns that form your design, cutting only near the lines. Use freezer paper and turn it over so that you reveal the side that does not have a shine. You want to create a starting line for the six centers of your flowers, and the flowers also. Once you mark the 12 parts, mark the leaves (12), marking them inside the dash lines. Now you are ready to cut your shapes. You will need an iron and board. Use your hot press, or iron to press the flowers on your paper, pressing in the middle of your flowers on the left side and in the middle. You want the glossy paper turned in the direction of your fabric flower at this point. Do the same with the center of the flowers and foliage. Next, collect your yellow filament/thread and tone it with the center of your flower. If the colors do not match, try another shade of yellow. Run lines of stitches into your cloth, which encloses the ring of the freezer paper. You want to congregate your material around this ring, so pull your filament up at the end. Now, tie your thread, press the ring, and use your starch bottle, spraying the region. Do the same for the center of your flowers. Next, use your variety of green filaments that match your leaves and collect the allowances at the seam. (1/4 inch) Collect around the foliage and streamlines of stitches along your fabric, about the enclosed region of your ring that is designed on the freezer paper. You want to collect your textile about the ring. Pull your filament/thread up at the finish and tie it, pressing the ring. Again, spray with starch. When you congregate your allowances at the flower seams, snip the inner points of the flower corolla/petals where the flower collectively forms a ring. You will need to collect your thread that matches the color of your petals, such as pink. Just as you collected the edges of your leaves, do the same for your corollas. Once you finish running stitch lines in your fabric, which you have enclosed freezer paper about the ring, you will need to gather your material about the ring. Next, pull your strands of thread up at the finish. Next, bind your filament and then press the ring. Press, and spray the region with fabric starch. Now seam your allowances, i. e. snip the central points of the leaves, flower center, etc where the flower collectively forms a ring. Press and starch to complete your crafting task: Now you are ready to assemble the top of your quilt. After you assemble, you can move to finish your craft.
